It is 1900 and work is scarce.  Enticed by promises of work and good pay, people flock to Textile Mills in the South.  They leave their beloved mountains to what they hope is a step up from their grinding poverty.  Its guaranteed pay and housing for as long as can maintain the health to work.

Lottie is free from the cruelty of her first husband and marries Beck Radford. Being the sighted sister of the Hooper/Watson family, Lottie is grieved by a dream of sorrow that will come to her home.  Yet, she leaves Cocke County, Tennessee, along with her four children from a previous marriage, and goes with Beck to Clifton, South Carolina.  She is a stranger to village life and close neighbors. Life is harder than any of them imagined.  In spite of their hard work, widespread poverty remained a fact of life for everyone in Clifton.  Lottie’s “gift” of second sight into the future is not an ability she would have chosen.   What she didn’t see coming, yet someone else did, was a tragic event that rips apart their life, as well as everyone’s around them.
